First-time buyers often pause here, unsure which to choose. This guide explains the difference clearly — so you can pick the right format with confidence and get straight to stitching.
What Is a Printed Fabric Panel?
A printed fabric panel is a piece of fabric with the embroidery design already printed directly onto it. The lines and shapes of the pattern are visible on the cloth, acting as a guide for your stitches. You simply hoop it up and begin.
The advantages of printed fabric panels:
- No tracing required — the design is on the fabric, so there's no fiddly transfer process.
- Accurate placement guaranteed — perfect symmetry and spacing every time, without the wobble of hand-tracing.
- Ideal for beginners — removes one of the most common pain points for newcomers and lets you focus purely on your stitching.
- Faster to start — open the package, hoop the fabric, and you're stitching within minutes.
- Great for complex designs — intricate patterns with fine detail that would be difficult to trace accurately are perfectly rendered.
Things to consider:
- Printed lines are designed to be covered by stitches, but very open designs may leave some lines visible at the edges. Always stitch slightly into the printed line to ensure full coverage.
- You'll receive the fabric we've selected, which is specially chosen to complement the design. If you prefer to stitch on a different fabric, a PDF pattern gives you that freedom.
- Physical items have a postage lead time, whereas a PDF is instant.
What Is a PDF Pattern?
A PDF embroidery pattern is a digital file containing the full design artwork, along with instructions for transferring it to your own fabric. Once purchased, you download it immediately and print it at home — or take it to a copy shop if you need a larger size.
The advantages of PDF patterns:
- Instant access — download immediately after purchase; no waiting for delivery.
- Print at any size — scale the design up or down to suit your hoop or project.
- Stitch on your chosen fabric — complete freedom to work on linen, cotton, silk, or any surface you prefer.
- Reusable and shareable — print multiple copies for gifts, classes, or to stitch the same design again on a different colourway.
- No international shipping costs — ideal for our international stitching community.
Things to consider:
- You'll need to transfer the design to your fabric yourself. Common methods include a light box, window tracing, or carbon transfer paper. This adds a small but worthwhile extra step.
- Transfer accuracy depends on your technique — a light box gives the most reliable results.
- You'll need to source your own fabric, which is a bonus if you love choosing your materials, but an extra task if you'd rather just get stitching.
